Looking for an OpenRouter alternative

OpenRouter put hundreds of models behind one key and made switching between them trivial. If that is all you need, it is very good at it.

What OpenRouter is good at

01

Breadth, and speed of access. A model appears there within days of release, often before the lab’s own API is easy to get hold of.

02

A free tier that is genuinely free, and a pricing page that hides nothing.

Where we are different

01

The route does not change between calls

OpenRouter picks a provider per request, usually on price. That is the right design for breadth and the wrong one for consistency: the same model can accept a setting on one call and reject it on the next, because a different provider served it. We choose one route per model and hold it, with the rest kept as failover.

02

The rate is published and it holds

Our rate for a listed model is stored against that model. When a provider raises theirs, it costs us margin rather than reaching your invoice mid-month.

03

It runs near you

Our gateway serves from Colombo, Singapore and Bangalore. For a team in South Asia that is the difference between a request crossing an ocean and not.

04

It is not only a gateway

The same account deploys your applications and their databases. Most people who need a gateway are building something that also needs somewhere to run.

Who should not switch

01

If you want the widest possible model list, including brand-new and obscure ones, stay. We carry the major models, not all of them.

02

If you are optimising purely on price per token and do not mind which provider answers, stay — that is exactly what OpenRouter is built for.

Moving over

Change the base URL and the key. The API is OpenAI-compatible, so an SDK already pointed at OpenRouter works unchanged.

The gateway is covered in AI Gateway, hosting in App hosting, and what everything costs on pricing.
